Madagascar hissing cockroaches are one of the biggest cockroaches on the planet. In their normal natural surroundings on the island of Madagascar (which is close to Africa) Madagascar hissing cockroaches jump at the chance to live in spoiling logs.
Male cockroaches differentiate between known cockroaches and outsiders by the murmuring sound they make. The males are more forceful than females. The males are also regional and battle among themselves, smashing and pushing each other with their guts and horns. Hissing can be utilized to share information about the cockroach making the clamor. Toward the finish of the battle, the champ will make a boisterous hissing sound to proclaim his triumph. Madagascar hissing cockroaches are typically active during the evening, but they can be seen battling amid the day.
The males will also hiss when pursuing females. They mate end to end with the male driving his stomach area along and under the female’s body until he contacts her belly’s end and connects with her.
Description
The hissing cockroach of Madagascar (Gromphadorhina portentosa), also known as the hissing cockroach or simply hisser, which grows up to 7.5 cm in length at maturity, Madagascar hissing cockroaches are one of the largest cockroach species. Hissing cockroaches are brown, wingless and have long antennae. The males have larger protuberances in the thorax and antennas more humid than the females.
Unlike most cockroaches, they do not have wings. They are excellent climbers and can climb smooth glass. Males are distinguished from females by their thicker, more hairy antennae and the pronounced “horns” in pronotum. Females carry the ootheca (egg carton) internally and release young nymphs only after the eggs are born. As in some other cockroaches that inhabit wood, parents and offspring will commonly remain in physical contact for extended periods of time. In captivity, these insects can live 5 years. They feed mainly on plant material.
Habitat
Hissing cockroaches are omnivores that feed mainly on vegetables and other decomposing organic matter. Despite their large size, Madagascar hissing cockroaches can hide in incredibly narrow spaces. Madagascar hissing cockroaches live on the forest floors and under rotten logs. Hissing cockroaches feed on fallen fruits and decaying organic matter and can live up to five years. The hissing cockroaches are found mainly in the tropical lowland rainforests of Madagascar. They tend to live on the dry litter on the forest floor.
