Quick Facts On Mosquitos

Mosquitoes are one of life’s most annoying things. They are indeed small, about .125 to .75 inches in length, but they are terrible. First, they have this annoying buzz whenever they fly around your ears. They also have great reflexes, regardless of how slow they fly.  You cannot just swap them around easily. Worst of all, they are the deadliest creatures on this planet as they are responsible for more deaths than all the wars combined due to the diseases they spread all over the world.

Have you ever wondered, though, how they select their next victims? Read on.

How Do Mosquitoes Find Their Next Victims?

Mosquitoes make use of exhaled carbon dioxide from humans and animals.  Aside from carbon dioxide, they also make use of body odor and temperature to find their next host. Only the female mosquitoes bite. Their mouthparts consist of two tubes: one for injecting an enzyme to prevent blood clotting, the other for sucking the blood.

How Come Some People Get Bitten More than the others?

A study has shown that among the factors that affect the choices of the mosquitoes on who to bite is the genes. Now, this is a breakthrough, as no other study prior to this has come up with this finding. This study was based on the fact that female mosquitoes prefer the scent of people based on their body odor. If you put two people together, and they sense one with a body odor that is pleasing to them, they will most likely fly to that person and bite him immediately while being oblivious to the other person. Now, do not feel bad or jealous if mosquitoes do not find you attractive. People who are found less attractive have been so because they produce natural repellents. This trait apparently is genetically controlled.

It is also believed that diet has something to do with desirability. It was said that eating garlic can help repel mosquitoes. However, no studies back these claims yet.

There are other factors as to why mosquitoes bite a person. Among these are:

  • People with Blood Type O
  • Alcohol drinkers
  • People who are working out. This produces sweat, lactic acid, heat, and of course, movement. These are attractive to mosquitoes.
  • People with high levels of uric acid.
  • People who give off carbon dioxide more than normal levels, like pregnant women and overweight persons.
  • People who use steroids.
  • People with high levels of cholesterol on their skin.

If you happen to be one of these people, please take proper precautions.  We now know mosquito bites can cause so many diseases. To avoid those bites, here are a few tips:

1. Use insect repellents that are Environmental Protection Agency - approved. Choose one containing the ingredient DEET for a higher level of protection.

2. As much as possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants for added protection.

3. When sleeping, use a mosquito net in the bedroom.
