Common Types of Cockroaches We Treat Across the Region
Not every cockroach behaves the same way, and knowing which one has moved into your home helps shape how we approach the problem.
German Cockroaches
These are the ones most people picture when they think of a roach infestation. Small, light brown, and fast breeders, German cockroaches tend to cluster around kitchens and bathrooms where there's food, warmth, and moisture. They're the most common type we come across in homes throughout the Carolinas, Georgia, and Virginia.
American Cockroaches
Bigger and reddish-brown, American cockroaches are often found in basements, crawl spaces, sewers, and drains. Homeowners sometimes call these "palmetto bugs," especially in coastal areas of the Carolinas and Georgia.
Oriental Cockroaches
Dark, shiny, and slow-moving, Oriental cockroaches prefer damp, cooler areas like basements, drains, and mulch beds close to the foundation. They give off a stronger, more noticeable odor than other species.
Brown-Banded Cockroaches
Smaller and often found higher up in a home, brown-banded roaches like warm, dry spots such as behind picture frames, inside cabinets, or near appliances that generate heat.
Signs You Might Have a Cockroach Problem
Cockroaches are good at staying out of sight, so by the time you see one during the day, there's often a larger group nearby. A few things worth paying attention to:
- Small, dark droppings that look like coffee grounds or black pepper, usually along baseboards or inside cabinets
- A musty, oily smell that lingers in one part of the home
- Egg cases (small, brown, capsule-shaped) tucked behind appliances or in cracks
- Shed skins left behind as young cockroaches grow
- Grease or dirt smear marks along walls or floors where roaches travel
