Can Pest Control Get Rid Of Lizards? (Triangle Exterminators)

How many times have you been caught unaware by a lizard crawling on the wall next to you? Lizards seem to have a knack for sneaking up on unsuspecting humans, causing disbelief in many.

Lizards are seen as pests by many household owners in the Triangle region. A lot of people fear lizards, probably because of the way they look; it always seems like they are going to bite. While they are generally harmless, lizards, as with any other creatures, will bite if they feel threatened. These bites usually happen whenever someone tries to remove a lizard from inside the house. Lizards have small teeth that can pierce the skin, so you have to be careful with lizards.

Is It Okay To Have Lizards Hanging Around The House?

Lizards are generally peaceful creatures. They tend to just be the “lizard on the wall," just watching the world go by. This is why some people tolerate their presence. But it is not okay to have lizards around for quite a number of reasons.

Here is why you have to get rid of lizards in your house:

  1. They bite. Like we mentioned earlier, lizards bite whenever they feel threatened. If you have kids, who are naturally inquisitive, lizards are indeed dangerous. Imagine your child picking up one! That can really result in a disaster.
  2. They might fall on you, your food, or your drinks. Even though lizards are naturally good at crawling walls and ceilings, there will be some instances wherein they would lose grip and fall. This happens a lot, so be careful
  3. They can damage plants.
  4. They defecate all over. Lizards droppings are black and stick to walls, where they usually like to stay. This can cause diseases when it comes into contact with our food and water, or when accidentally ingested.
  5. Having lizards is unsanitary. Lizards can be carrying bacteria and viruses, which can cause diseases like salmonella.
  6. Lizards can crawl into machines or appliances. This can cause breakdowns in your appliances.
  7. Lizards shed skin, and leave them anywhere. Aside from being unsanitary, this will also attract other pests, like ants and roaches.

What Are Lizards?

There are around 6,000 lizards worldwide, making them the most plentiful of all reptiles. They all have different sizes, the largest of them all is the Komodo dragon which can grow to as long as 10 ft and weigh 176 lbs. The smallest is the tiny dwarf gecko, which is just .6 inches in length. Lizards can be found all over the world. Aside from living inside houses, they also live in trees, some live on rocks in the desert, and some prefer to live on the ground where they can be near vegetation.

The most common features of lizards are their scaly skin, very long tails, small heads, long nails, clawed feet, four legs, eyelids that close, and external ear openings. With these features, it is understandable why many are actually afraid of them. They thrive on insects and a few of them eat plants. Those that feed on insects usually eat flies, roaches, beetles, bugs, wasps, ants, spiders, aphids, and grasshoppers.

In order for them to reproduce, they lay eggs. There are a few however that produce their offspring alive, like some species of horned lizards. Those that do lay eggs do so during the months of May to August and hatch during the months of July to September. Baby lizards, once they get out of their shells, are already independent and do not require the care of their mothers. They are self-sufficient and can feed on their own. At the age of 18 months, they become mature and can live up to 7 years. Since there are many different types of lizards, lifespans would naturally differ. Some lizards can live as long as 50 years. As lizards grow older, they shed their skins in large flakes. They need to because their scales do not grow along with them as they do.

When faced with threats or handled roughly, lizards have the ability to detach from their tails as they escape. The tail continues to wiggle as they run away. This is helpful in distracting their predators, and they will grow another tail soon after. Lizards are cold-blooded animals, so they are active during the day to catch some sun. They use the heat of the sun to raise their body temperatures. They are active when their bodies are warm.

Why Do I Have Lizards In My House?

There are reasons why lizards are at your house. It is not as if they just accidentally stumbled into it. Here are some of the reasons why lizards are in your house:

  1. You are in an area where there are plenty of lizards. - Humans have claimed areas that were once inhabited by animals, and these animals are starting to lose their habitat. If your area has a hot climate, then chances are there are plenty of lizards there. Colder weather usually means lesser lizards.
  2. You have plenty of insects. Lizards love to feed on insects. - The presence of flies, mosquitoes, winged termites, and other flying insects will surely attract them. Since lizards are always on the walls and ceilings, they certainly can get access to these flying insects. Aside from that, lizards prefer being near a light, that is why they can easily capture insects flying near the light source. The danger here would be that since these lizards are up there, they could easily fall off anywhere; they might fall on your glass of water, on your food, or into electrical wiring where they would cause damage. There is also that concern over lizard droppings. This normally happens when you have heavy lizard infestation. Aside from the flying insects, lizards also look for insects crawling on the ground. Here they find spiders, grasshoppers, snails, caterpillars, and many others. As you can see, lizards will go where there is food.
  3. At the same time, what attracts insects to your home is what attracts lizards too. - If you have breadcrumbs, pieces of cookies, chocolates, or junk food lying around the house, you are going to have problems for sure.
  4. Doors and windows are left open. - Leaving the doors and windows open allows easy access to lizards, so be sure to close them.
  5. There are cracks, crevices, and holes around the house. - These openings are also entry points for lizards.
  6. There is plenty of clutter in your home. - Lizards like to hide in cluttered places. You might need to reduce clutter to prevent lizards from hiding.
  7. You have standing water, leaky pipes, or garden ponds. - Lizards are looking for water as much as they are looking for food.
  8. Fruits and plants. - Lizards love to eat fruits and plants.

How To Control The Lizards

It can really be very annoying to see lizards crawling on our walls. Yet there are ways to get them out ourselves.

Here are some of the things you can do:

  1. Cut off their food source by getting rid of the insects that may have infested your home. This though may present a different course of action altogether, depending on what type of insects you have.
  2. Throw your garbage regularly since this will attract ants which in turn would attract lizards.
  3. Wipe off drink spills and food debris. Mop and sweep the floor to remove food residue that may have fallen off the floor.
  4. Lizards hate cold temperatures since they are warm-blooded animals, so you can regulate the temperature.
  5. Regularly check the cabinets under the sinks. This is their favorite hangout because it is dark and damp there.
  6. Using naphthalene balls is an effective way to repel lizards. Be careful if you have kids though.
  7. Seal cracks, crevices, and holes by caulking. These openings can be used as entry points by these lizards. Check the corner of doors and windows, around pipes, and ventilation screens.
  8. Trap lizards by using sticky tape. Once you catch them, set them free outside the house.
  9. Remove items that can hold water, like old cans, old tires, abandoned birdbaths, and old gutters. This will reduce standing water. This attracts both mosquitoes and lizards.
  10. Keep your food inside sealed containers, including fruits and vegetables. You would not want to share your food with lizards.
